Into the Wilderness

I run
From the Wilderness
That parched and haunted place
Called the dark night of the soul
Yet I lived there
For seven years
And I would not trade it for any sum

We buck under the pain
Of discipline and refining fire
We look for an easy ladder
To climb out of the furnace
We cry, because we feel so alone in it
It brings tears to my eyes
It feels so very hopeless and alone

Even Jesus spent His times in the wild
Hungry, thirsty, alone, and tempted
He too felt forsaken by God
Wept and begged friends to keep company and they slept
He asked for the bitter cup to be taken away
Do not forget in this dry place
If we feel abandoned by God and still choose Him...

Here we imitate His son
Picture the surrender of the seed
While it is buried in the dark
It sacrifices husk and pushes up to new life
Here in the desert is where He asks us
To see and strip away our stipulations
Learn to lean on Him without reservation

When we cannot feel God and doubt
He is working, in His time not our time
Learn here, that His grace is enough
Green pastures will be yours again
