The Watchmaker's Lesson
The watchmaker gave the young girl a gift
A watch with a word that could change her world
Across the face that held hands ticking time away
“Eternity” in small letters printed
She wore this watch daily and pondered this thing
And how the weight of this could rebalance her life
The boulders that would trouble her when to eternity held
Specs of dust that the wind blew away
As years expired, the watch was retired
Trapped in the daily worries she became
She lost the freedom to not be caged in each moment
Too bound to build life with imperishable perspective
That which mattered faded in felt importance
Her value became based on things that would never last
She forgot that the body she hated, revered, and painted
Would soon be rotting away
She marveled at how life's brevity could crush her
And then be so easily forgotten
How hard it was to hold on to that death would inevitably cut
The cord that kept her soul tethered here
The watchmakers lesson
Precious time is worth
The things that do not turn to ash
When held to the fire of forever
